Iquitos Peru

The People of Peru Project, a US 501c3, is providing aid to the region of Peru that is located at theheadwaters of the Amazon River. Iquitos is a city of 700,000 people surrounded by thousands of square miles of jungle. Poverty, 62% live below poverty level, and all that comes with it plague this city. Disease, parasites, malnutrition, rampant tooth decay, and premature death are a part of daily life.

As in any developing country, with conditions like this, the children suffer the most. Many are left alone to survive on the streets or in the surrounding jungle with no parent or family unit to provide care. "More than 20% of children have no birth certificate or identity documents and therefore do not officially exist. Without these papers it is impossible to go to school and the children cannot get assistance in hospitals or other state agencies."

People of Peru Project has given free medical/dental care to over 60,000 impoverished people over the last 15 years and we have changed the economic situations for individuals, families and entire villages by giving opportunities and education for self help.

People of Peru Project is committed to best practices that result in positive change for families and children. “We focus on specific individuals, specific families and specific communities, because if you go around dropping good works everywhere, you’re spitting in the wind,” says Paul Opp, President.

This commitment to individuals has come full circle as two children from the streets now provide leadership for People of Peru Project in Iquitos (Click on the video to hear part of the story). Plus a continued interest in transforming the lives of people in need led to the purchase of a building - to create a space for the ministry of healing.

Your donation will help us to renovate and transform the recently purchased 8,000sf building into a surgery center. Your gift will open the doors to health services to persons who have no access to health care. And you will create a surgery center dedicated to training the next generation of local surgeons.

Your gift will empower The People of Peru Surgery Center Project to make a difference in the city of Iquitos. Be part in transforming the lives of these Amazon people by making this surgery center a reality.
