Millions of Children Live Deaf or Speech impaired in India

The Five Loaves Foundation is partnering with Child Impact International in two much needed projects. The Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial School in Bangladesh, and the School for the Hearing and Speech Impaired in Kollegal, India.

1.8-7 Million deaf/speech impaired persons in India live in dispersed isolation

Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial School

Child Impact International urgently needs a new Administration and classroom building at Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial School, a large boarding school and orphanage in Southern Bangladesh. There are 500 students and 175 of them are orphans. The building is 75 years old and a recent engineer’s report recommends demolition immediately because it is located in a seismic active area.

The saline soil has also deteriorated the concrete columns and the walls are crumbling revealing rusted rebar—something we’ll address during reconstruction. The proposed new multi-purpose building would house a preschool, classrooms, library and administrative offices. Your contribution will help to reconstruct the building and insure the safety of students and staff.

School for the Hearing and Speech Impaired

The School for the Hearing and Speech Impaired in Kollegal, India has urgent needs. The director and his wife, Jacob and Shiny are very committed, kind and talented people. The school has a robust curriculum, caring teachers, some vocational courses, sturdy buildings and vegetable gardens. Boys and girls are currently housed in separate parts of the main campus building. However, they need to build a new boy’s dormitory. A new boy’s dorm will alleviate crowding and free up space to be converted into vocational training facilities, a science lab, an audio studio and a new vocational course in computer literacy. All of these will help children at the school gain valuable skills and improve their employment prospects. Employers in India often hire hearing-impaired workers for data entry work. The Kollegal community feels the deaf school is a great asset because deafness is quite common in the area. In India deafness is often misunderstood and deaf children experience prejudice, discrimination, and limited opportunities. With your support, this project will increase their capacity to help more precious disadvantaged children.
